North Star Publishing, Printing and Design emerged in the 1920’s – in the back shop of the Daily Journal newspaper company. In 1988, a fire nearly destroyed the building housing both companies – resulting in the company making a proactive decision to use this as an opportunity to regroup and grow the two companies.
And grow we did! In 1998, The Daily Journal and North Star Publishing moved to a new 28,000 square foot facility. Add state-of-the-art equipment, a talented design department, the latest software, Heidelberg sheet fed printing presses, bindery equipment – and the growth continued as North Star reached out to service the tourism industry throughout Northern Minnesota and Northwestern Ontario.
A visitor’s guide product of The Daily Journal, “BorderWaters”, was spun off to North Star in 2005. BorderWaters is now a successful tourism marketing agency, complete with a comprehensive visitor’s guide, web site and clothing line.

For 2006, North Star is planning to market mailing services for their customers, with the addition of new equipment and software. We didn’t stop investing there. North Star kept moving forward and made the decision to purchase a new six color Flexo printing press, which will position us a premier label producer.
Currently, The Daily Journal, North Star and BorderWaters employ 44 people – that’s a dozen more than in 1988. Nearly half of the employees work for North Star. Planning, dedicated people, a penchant for pleasing the customer and an ear to the market are our recipe for growth.
The future certainly looks bright for North Star – and the customers we enjoy serving. |
